Common Eye Diseases & Conditions
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetes can have a particularly devastating effect on your eye health. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that develops when the delicate blood vessels in the eye sustain damage due to high glucose levels. These damaged blood vessels can leak, causing retinal scarring and swelling, both of which can result in permanent vision loss.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye disease that generally results from high intraocular pressure that causes permanent damage to the optic nerve, which is responsible for transmitting messages from the eyes to the brain. In most cases, glaucoma develops slowly over a long period of time. The gradual vision loss caused by glaucoma can be so incremental, patients often don’t notice it until they’ve already lost a significant portion of their sight. The only way to diagnose glaucoma is through an eye exam.
Cataracts
As you age, the proteins in your eyes’ natural lenses become cloudy or hazy. This progressive haze is called a cataract. Everyone develops cataracts eventually, as they are a natural part of ageing. Early cataracts are typically treated with a change in glasses prescription and magnifiers. Eventually, when a stronger prescription no longer helps, the cataract can be surgically replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration
The macula is the small, particularly sensitive portion of the retina that allows you to read, recognize facial features, and perform other detailed tasks. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) describes two different conditions, dry AMD and wet AMD, that damage the macula and cause a loss of central vision. Most cases of macular degeneration develop slowly over time, making them difficult to detect without an eye exam and retinal imaging.
